Retiring from Canada
Retiring in the Philippines from Canada
Canada has one of the largest Filipino communities in the world, and many families look for care for a parent back home. Canadian retirees also choose the Philippines. This guide explains your pensions and health cover when you live here, and what care at Bambu Harmony Living in Tanauan City, Batangas costs in Canadian dollars.
OAS and CPP in the Philippines
You can receive Old Age Security while you live abroad if you lived in Canada for at least 20 years after age 18. If you have less, the Canada–Philippines social security agreement, in force since 1997, lets periods credited under the Philippine pension system count toward those 20 years. Without either, OAS can only be paid outside Canada for up to 6 months.
The agreement also works the other way: periods of Canada Pension Plan contributions and of residence in Canada can count toward a Philippine SSS or GSIS pension. Service Canada lists the forms for the Philippines on its website.
Provincial health cover
Provincial and territorial health plans are for residents. When you move abroad for good, you generally lose that coverage. Check your province’s rules before you leave, and plan for health insurance that covers you in the Philippines.
